We recently received the following question at College Grazing--My daughter is so involved in extracurricular activities that her grades have suffered somewhat. She claims that extracurricular activities are very important to college admission people. I wonder if this is true and how important are they—How do they stack up against other application requirements?Response--According to the National Association for College Admission Counseling only 8% of colleges surveyed rate extracurricular activities as "considerably important." Our advice is to participate in extra activities to enrich your high school experience and to develop yourself as a person. Be careful not to overload your schedule and don't participate just to create an "impressive" college application.
